Executive Summary (reposted from the final report):
The animal advocacy movement, similar to other successful social movements, recognizes the necessity of achieving institutional progress to create widespread and lasting change for animals. Corporate campaigns, which specifically target companies with animals in their supply chains, have emerged as a vital strategy in this pursuit. These campaigns aim to influence corporate policies and practices, leading to tangible improvements in animal welfare, such as commitments to source cage-free eggs or adhere to higher standards for broiler chickens. This qualitative research report delves into the multifaceted nature of these institutional campaigns, analyzing the factors that contribute to their success, the obstacles they encounter, the tactics they employ, and the opportunities for future growth. By drawing upon the insights of experts in the field and supplementing these with relevant data from academic papers, industry reports, and organizational publications, this report provides a comprehensive overview of the corporate animal advocacy landscape in the EU and North America over the last decade. Using thematic analysis, our report identified success indicators, key barriers, effective tactics and growth opportunities for animal advocacy campaigns. Six themes emerged: strategic planning and pragmatic asks; maintaining momentum; follow-through and enforcement; engagement and public pressure; collaboration and communication; and available training and resources. In this report, we first explore the key elements that contribute to the success of these campaigns, followed by an exploration of the significant barriers that advocates face. Subsequently, the report will detail the primary tactics utilized in corporate campaigns and then analyze the evolution of this advocacy over the past ten years. Finally, the report identifies potential growth opportunities for ongoing and future corporate campaigns.
